At some point most families hit the same wall. The phone says storage is full. The laptop holds four years of photos with no copy anywhere else. Someone wants an old home video and nobody can find it. The usual answer is to pay a little more each month for cloud storage, which is a fine answer and the one most people should take.

There is another option that does not get explained well, usually because the people explaining it are enthusiasts talking to other enthusiasts. It is a small box that sits in your house, holds a lot of storage, and lets everyone in the family reach it from any device. This is a network attached storage device, almost always shortened to NAS. Here is what it is, who benefits, and the parts left out of the sales pitch.

What a Network Storage Box Actually Is

Picture an external hard drive. Now imagine that instead of plugging into one computer, it plugs into your home internet router and everyone in the house can reach it at once. That is a NAS: a small always on computer whose only job is to hold files and hand them out over your home network.

You reach it the same way you reach anything else: an app on your phone, a folder on your laptop, and a web page in a browser to manage it. Most can also stream video to a TV and back up your phone’s camera roll automatically. Most can let you reach files from outside the house too, which is where the caution comes in later.

On cost, so you can decide whether to keep reading: in 2026, a small two drive enclosure with no drives inside typically runs a few hundred dollars, with hard drives another hundred or two each depending on capacity. Treat those as rough figures and check current prices, because storage pricing moves. The appeal is that you pay once instead of monthly.

Who It Is Really For

This is not for everybody. If your family’s whole digital life is a few thousand phone photos and some documents, a cloud subscription is simpler, cheaper, and requires nothing from you. Buy the storage plan and enjoy your weekend.

A NAS starts making sense when one of these describes you.

  • You have a genuinely large photo or video library. Someone who shoots video, or a family with fifteen years of pictures, hits cloud pricing tiers where a one time hardware purchase starts looking reasonable.
  • Several people need the same files. One shared library of photos and documents works much better from a box in the house than from five separate accounts.
  • You want a copy that is not on someone else’s servers. A legitimate preference, not paranoia. Companies change pricing, change terms, and occasionally close products.
  • You are the household tech person anyway. If you enjoy this sort of thing, you will get more out of it than the instructions suggest.

What it is not good at: being fast when you are away from home, because your upload speed at the house becomes the ceiling. It is also not effortless. It is a computer, and computers need attention.

Drive Redundancy Is Not a Backup

This is the most misunderstood thing about these boxes, and it matters more than anything else here.

Most NAS units hold two or more hard drives and can be set so the drives mirror each other. If one dies, the other still has everything, and you replace the dead one without losing a file. That is called redundancy. It is genuinely useful, because hard drives do fail and yours will eventually.

But redundancy protects you from one specific thing: a drive breaking. It does not help with any of these, all of which happen to real families. You delete a folder by accident and the deletion copies instantly to both drives. Ransomware encrypts your files, and both copies. The house floods, or there is a fire, or somebody walks off with the box. In each case, mirrored drives give you nothing.

The rule worth remembering comes from the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, which recommends a 3-2-1 approach: three copies of important files, two different types of storage, and one copy kept off site. CISA publishes that for businesses, and it applies the same way to a family’s photos. Your NAS is one copy. A very good copy. Not three, and not off site. Most people solve this by having the box upload an encrypted copy to a cloud service overnight: the NAS for daily speed, the cloud for the copy that survives your house.

The Security Basics, Because These Do Get Targeted

Home storage boxes get attacked, and not theoretically. In a joint advisory published in 2020, CISA and the United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre described malware called QSnatch that had infected roughly 62,000 network storage devices worldwide by the middle of that year. These devices are attractive because they are always on, they hold everything, and many are reachable from the open internet with settings nobody ever changed.

You do not need to be an expert to handle this. Five things cover most of it.

  1. Change the default login immediately. The Federal Trade Commission gives the same advice for home routers: change the default administrative username and password to something unique. Do it during setup.
  2. Do not expose it to the internet unless you truly need to. That 2020 CISA and NCSC advisory recommends blocking external connections when a device is meant to be used strictly for internal storage. If you only use it at home, leave it at home.
  3. Turn on updates and install them. Look for a section named something like update, firmware, or system in the settings page, and enable automatic updates if offered.

  5. Turn off what you are not using. Remote access, file sharing services you never touch, experimental apps. The FTC makes the same point about routers: turn off remote management, and log out of the administrator account when you finish making changes.

The Honest Maintenance Commitment

Nobody selling these mentions this part, so we will. A NAS is not an appliance. It is a computer that runs constantly for years, and it asks for some of your time.

Realistically that means installing updates every month or two, reading the health warnings it emails you, and replacing a hard drive every few years when one starts to fail. Eventually the whole unit gets old enough to need replacing. If nobody in your house will own those tasks, the box quietly stops being protected and then stops being reliable, and you will have spent money to feel safer without being safer. That is worse than just paying for cloud storage.

The Bottom Line

A home storage box is genuinely good technology for the right household. Big libraries, several people sharing files, and a preference for keeping your own copy are all real reasons to buy one. It is fast at home, costs once instead of monthly, and puts your family’s photos somewhere you control.

Just hold on to two things. Mirrored drives are not a backup, so pair it with an off site copy. And it needs an owner willing to update it. If those are handled, it is a great addition to a house.
