The first time you unlock your front door from the driveway with a phone in one hand and groceries in the other, you get it. No fumbling for keys. No fake rock in the flower bed with a spare inside it. You can let the dog walker in on Tuesday without handing out a copy of your key, and you can check from a parking lot whether the garage door is actually closed, which settles an argument that has been running in your house for years.

Then somebody asks the obvious question. You just took the one part of your house that has worked reliably for a century and connected it to the internet. Is that smart? The honest answer is that it depends almost entirely on how you set it up and what you planned for. A smart lock is not automatically less secure than a deadbolt, and it is not automatically more secure either. It is a different set of tradeoffs. Here is how to make them on purpose instead of by accident.

What These Devices Genuinely Make Better

Start with the wins, because they are real and they are why people keep buying these things.

  • No more hidden key. The spare under the mat is the least secure thing about most houses. Anyone who watches for twenty minutes finds it. A code you can change beats a key you cannot.
  • Access you can hand out and take back. The dog walker, the cleaner, the neighbor watering plants, the kid who forgot a key again. Each gets a code, and you remove it when the arrangement ends without changing a lock.
  • Knowing instead of wondering. Garage door status in an app is genuinely useful. So is a notification that the front door unlocked at 3:40 on a school afternoon, which is how a lot of parents confirm a kid got home.
  • Auto-lock. Most people’s real door security failure is not a picked lock. It is a door that never got locked. A lock that locks itself after a few minutes quietly fixes that.
  • A record. Knowing who unlocked what and when is useful for household coordination, and occasionally for more than that.

The Failure Modes Worth Planning For

Every smart device has a bad day eventually. With a lock, a bad day means standing outside your own house. Think these through before you buy, not after.

  • Dead batteries. The most common failure by far. Good locks warn you for weeks, and many offer an emergency power contact outside. Know which method yours uses and keep what it needs in the car, not inside the locked house.
  • Internet down. Ask whether the keypad still works when your home internet is out. Most do, because the keypad talks directly to the lock. Remote features will not.
  • The app or the service is down. If the manufacturer’s servers have a bad afternoon, remote control stops. Local access should keep working. Worth asking before you buy.
  • Power outage. Battery locks keep working. Garage openers are the problem. Every residential opener has a manual release, usually a cord hanging from the rail, and everyone in the house should know where it is and how to reconnect it afterward.

The general rule: assume the smart part will fail at the worst moment and make sure the dumb part still works. Which brings us to the single most important thing on this page.

Keep a Mechanical Backup

Some smart locks keep a normal key cylinder. Some are keypad only. Some replace only the interior thumb turn, leaving your existing key and cylinder intact, which is what we usually suggest for a first smart lock because it changes the least.

Whichever you choose, have a physical way in that does not depend on batteries, Wi-Fi, or a phone. A traditional key on one door, a spare in a proper lockbox with its own code, or a key with a trusted neighbor. This is not paranoia. It is the same reason you keep a spare tire.

The Account Is the Real Front Door

Here is the part people skip. The physical lock is usually well built. The weak point is the account that controls it, because that account can unlock your door from anywhere on earth. If someone gets into your email and your lock account uses that email, they do not need to pick anything.

The Federal Trade Commission’s guidance on securing internet-connected devices at home is direct about the basics: change factory default usernames and passwords on every device, use unique credentials you have not reused anywhere else, and turn on two-factor authentication where it is offered. The FTC also recommends checking for firmware updates, which is the software running inside the device itself, and keeping the phone app current.

Use a long unique password on the lock account, and use the strongest sign-in method the manufacturer supports. Text message codes are better than nothing. An authenticator app is better. Also protect the email address attached to the account, because password resets land there.

Your home network matters too. The FTC’s Wi-Fi guidance recommends changing the router’s default administrative name and password, using current wireless encryption, keeping router firmware updated, turning off remote management, and running a separate guest network. That last one is a nice trick for smart home gear: less-trusted devices sit on their own network and cannot reach the important ones.

Guest Codes, Expiration Dates, and Brands That Still Update

Guest codes are the best feature these locks have, and almost nobody uses them properly. The mistake is giving everyone the same code and never changing it. Within two years the contractor, three babysitters, a former neighbor, and someone’s ex all know how to open your front door.

  • One code per person. Name them in the app. When the log says a code was used, you want to know whose.
  • Set an expiration. Most locks let a code work only on certain days or only until a date you pick. Service visits and house sitters should always get one that expires.
  • Clean house twice a year. Delete codes for people who no longer need access. Put it on the calendar with the smoke detector batteries.
  • Avoid guessable codes. Not the house number, not a birth year. Worn keypad buttons give away a code that never changes, so rotate the family code occasionally.

On brands, the thing to look for is not the feature list. It is whether the company still ships updates for products it sold years ago. Check whether the manufacturer publishes security updates and roughly how long they promise to support a product. A lock that stopped receiving updates is a lock nobody is fixing. The FTC’s device guidance also suggests disconnecting older devices you no longer use, since their outdated security can create a weak point on your network. That applies to the smart plug you forgot about as much as it does the lock.

The Bottom Line

Smart locks and garage openers are a fair trade for most households. They remove the hidden key, they give you access you can revoke, and they fix the door that never got locked. In exchange you take on batteries, an app, and an account that deserves better protection than most people give it. Plan for the failures, keep a mechanical way in, treat the controlling account like the front door it is, and give guest codes an end date.
