Open the Wi-Fi list on your phone in almost any neighborhood and you get a little census of the street. The Wilson Family. Apt 304. NETGEAR58. FBI Surveillance Van. Each one is a small sign in a front yard, visible to anyone within a hundred feet, and most people picked theirs in four seconds during setup and never thought about it again.
The name itself is not going to get you robbed. Let us say that up front, because this is not a scary topic. But a network name is the first thing anyone learns about your house without asking, and it sits alongside two other things worth ten minutes of attention: who is actually connected to your internet right now, and what happens when a visitor or a contractor needs to get online. All three are quick, and none of them require you to understand networking.
What a network name tells a stranger
A network name, sometimes called an SSID, broadcasts to every device in range. It does not identify you personally unless you make it do so, and plenty of people do exactly that without thinking about it.
- Your family name ties the network to a person. Once someone can connect a signal to a surname, they can connect it to an address, a workplace, and a social profile. That is the raw material for a convincing phone call.
- Your unit or house number removes the guesswork. Naming a network after an apartment number tells anyone in the building exactly which door the signal belongs to.
- The factory default names your equipment. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Project Upskill guidance on home Wi-Fi warns that “the default SSID could potentially alert a threat actor to known vulnerabilities,” because a model number is a shortcut to that model’s published weaknesses.
- The joke names are fine. Genuinely. A network called Pretty Fly For A Wi-Fi gives away nothing at all, which makes it better than the clever ones that hint at who lives there.
The Federal Trade Commission gives the same advice for home networks, recommending that you “Change the default administrative username, password, and network name to something unique,” and specifically cautioning against using your name, your address, or your router brand in that name or in your passwords. Pick something that means nothing to a stranger. That is the entire standard.
Hiding a network is not securing one
There is a setting on most routers that stops the network name from broadcasting, and it feels like a security feature. It is not really one. The network is still there, still transmitting, and readily visible to anyone with software built for finding networks. What hiding does reliably is make your own devices harder to connect and flakier about reconnecting.
What actually secures a network is encryption and a strong password. The FTC’s guidance is specific here: “To encrypt your network, simply update your router settings to either WPA3 Personal or WPA2 Personal.” CISA’s Project Upskill guidance agrees, describing WPA3 Personal and WPA2 AES as “the only two forms of encryption that are considered safe and secure.” You will find this in the wireless security section of your router’s app or admin page. If yours is set to anything older, change it.
Two other things belong in the same visit. First, the router has its own login, separate from the Wi-Fi password, and CISA notes that “default router information may be publicly available for anyone to find.” Change it. Second, turn on automatic firmware updates if your router offers them, since CISA points out that routine updates protect against known vulnerabilities. Both are one time actions.
Who is actually connected right now
This is the part people find genuinely interesting. Nearly every router made in the last several years has a list of connected devices, usually in the app your internet provider gave you or on the router’s admin page. Most people are surprised twice: once by how many devices are on there, and once by how many they cannot identify.
- Expect a bigger number than you guessed. Phones, laptops, televisions, streaming sticks, consoles, printers, thermostats, doorbells, speakers, watches. Twenty five is a normal family house.
- Unidentifiable is usually not sinister. Many devices report a generic name or a string of letters and numbers. Turning a suspect device off and watching which entry drops off the list identifies it fastest.
- Rename what you recognize. Most routers let you assign a friendly name to a device. Ten minutes of labeling now makes every future check take one minute instead of twenty.
- Remove and forget what you no longer own. The phone you traded in two years ago does not need standing access to your network.
- If you truly cannot account for something, change the password. Changing the Wi-Fi password kicks everything off and makes each device reconnect. It is a mild inconvenience and a complete reset.
Guest access for visitors and contractors
Your main Wi-Fi password has probably been shared more times than you remember. Houseguests, a painter, a babysitter, someone’s cousin who needed to download something. None of those people are threats. The issue is that you have lost track, and that everyone you gave it to landed on the same network as your computers.
A guest network fixes both problems at once. The FTC recommends setting one up so that your main password stays private and a guest’s device, if it happens to be carrying something unpleasant, cannot reach the rest of your equipment. CISA adds that you should “Make a separate password that is long, random, and unique for accessing your Guest Wi-Fi.”
- Use it as the default for everyone who is not you. Guests, contractors, sitters, the kids’ friends. It becomes automatic once the password is written down somewhere convenient.
- Put smart home devices there too. CISA advises that you “connect any smart home and other IOT devices to your Guest Wi-Fi if internet access is the only thing they require,” which keeps them away from your computers and your router settings.
- Change the guest password when the job ends. After a renovation or a long house sitting stretch, one password change closes the loop cleanly.
- Do not reuse your main password for it. That turns the guest network into decoration.
A ten minute look, four times a year
Set a reminder for the first weekend of each quarter and run the same short pass. It takes about as long as making coffee, and after the first time it takes less.
- Open the connected devices list and read down it. Anything you cannot name, identify or remove.
- Confirm the encryption setting still shows WPA3 or WPA2. Router replacements and resets sometimes quietly change it.
- Check for a firmware update if automatic updates are not switched on.
- Rotate the guest password if anyone new has used it since last time.
- Make sure the router login is not the factory default and is not the same as your Wi-Fi password.

The bottom line
Rename the network to something that means nothing about you. Skip the hidden network trick and make sure encryption is on instead. Change the router’s own login off the factory default. Give visitors and smart devices a guest network. Then look at the connected device list once a quarter. That is the whole thing, and it is a single afternoon’s worth of attention spread across a year.
